Thinking about starting a spray tan or teeth whitening business? They’re both great beauty businesses, but they’re very different when it comes to startup cost, technique, pricing and repeat clients.
Which Makes More Money?
Spray tanning = lower price per appointment, but stronger repeat-client potential.Teeth whitening = higher-ticket appointment, but clients don’t need it as frequently.
Which Is Easier to Learn?
Spray tanning has more technique involved—gun settings, angles, speed, saturation, body types, solution knowledge, etc.
Teeth whitening is more structured and can feel less intimidating from a hands-on perspective, although proper education, protocols and legal research are still extremely important.
Which Costs More to Start?
Spray tanning generally has a lower startup investment.
Teeth whitening usually requires more upfront because of the LED light and equipment, but your price per appointment can also be significantly higher.
So…Which One Should You Start?
This is where I’d make it conversational:
Honestly, I don’t think there’s one “better” business. I think there’s a better business for you.
Want repeat clients and love learning a hands-on technique? Spray tanning might be your thing.
Want a higher-ticket service with a more structured appointment? Teeth whitening might be the better fit.
And if you’re sitting there thinking, “Well…I kind of want to do both,” that’s exactly why I love offering them together. The same client getting ready for a wedding, vacation, birthday or photoshoot may want both services.
